Which Kannada PDF do you have?

A Kannada PDF exported from a Unicode document has its text inside, and conversion pulls it out. A scanned Kannada PDF has only images, so the pages are recognised first and carry recognition’s error rate. Both upload the same way here. What decides how good the result is, is which of the two you started with.

Documents made in Nudi

Nudi is the Kannada typing software of Kannada Ganaka Parishat, funded by the Karnataka government in 2001 and long the default in its offices and schools. Versions up to 5.0 store Kannada as the font’s own glyph codes rather than as Unicode, so a PDF made with them copies out as Latin symbols. Our legacy converter has a table for Nudi 01 e, which also covers Nudi 01 k. Every spelling in it was drawn in the real font and compared with standard Kannada. Choose Kannada — Nudi 01 e in its script list. A Kannada reader has not yet checked the table, and the converted document says so.

What is preserved

Text, paragraph breaks and reading order are preserved. Fonts and exact page layout are approximated. Ottaksharas and the arkavattu, the reph, are written as standard Unicode Kannada sequences, so any Unicode Kannada font draws them correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Our office PDFs were made in Nudi. Which tool should I use?

If copying text out of the PDF gives Latin symbols rather than Kannada, use the legacy converter with Kannada — Nudi 01 e selected. If the text copies out as Kannada, this PDF to Word converter is the right one.

Will Kannada display correctly in the Word file?

Yes, provided the computer opening it has a Kannada font; current Windows, macOS and most Linux systems do. The text is standard Unicode, so it is correct whichever font draws it.

Can I convert a scanned Kannada PDF to Word?

Yes. Scanned pages are recognised and then written into the DOCX, with the accuracy described on our Kannada OCR page.

What file types can I use for Kannada OCR?

PDF, JPG, PNG and TIFF, up to 25 MB per file. Scanned PDFs are rasterised page by page before recognition, so a PDF with no text layer works the same as a photograph.

Is the output real Unicode text?

Yes. Output is standard Unicode, normalised to NFC, so it copies into Word, Google Docs or any editor and stays searchable. It is not an image of text and not a legacy font encoding.

Do I need an account?

No. The tool is free and requires no sign-up, no email and no payment. There are no advertisements on any page.

What happens to my files?

Uploads and results are stored encrypted and removed by a cleanup that runs every 15 minutes, so nothing is kept longer than 4 hours after upload. Files are processed to produce your result and are not used for anything else.

Should I use Auto Detect or pick the language myself?

Pick the language when you know it. Auto detection reads the script from the page and then verifies its guess, but a page with only a few lines, heavy noise, or mixed English gives it less to work with. Manual selection removes that uncertainty entirely.
